ACTIVE ageing in changing societies.
Older people’s social and digital resources in pandemic and post-pandemic ITaly
ACTIVE-IT aims at investigating the consequences of Covid-19 on active ageing in Italy and exploring the relational and digital resources enacted by older people to react to a changing social context
Duration: April 2022-March 2025
Active ageing and wellbeing during pandemics. A quantitative analysis on the impact of COVID-19 in Italy

From May 2022 to May 2024
The main aim of the Research Stream is to provide a quantitative description of the social effects of COVID-19 on the Italian old age population, analysing data from the Italian sample of the Survey for Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). We also aim to disentangle whether there are any specific gender differences with this respect. To capture the specificity of the Italian case, we shall adopt a comparative approach

Older people’s everyday life, practices, digital media uses. A qualitative study on older men and women living in the first European Red Zone

From May 2022 to May 2024
The main objective the Research Stream is to longitudinally investigate the consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak on older people’s everyday life practices, exploring the resources enacted to react to the challenges brought about by the health emergency. Similar to Research Stream 1, a part of the analysis shall focus specifically on gender differences. We shall collect and analyse wave 3-4 data of the qualitative Longitudinal Study on Older People’s Quality of Life during the Covid-19 pandemic (ILQA-19). ILQA-19 is carried out in a rural area of Lombardia, i.e., 10 villages of the Lodi province that were subject to the first lockdown in Europe; wave 1 and 2 data collection was funded by the previous Foundation Cariplo grant, under project Ageing in a Networked Society

Older people, new needs, and possible solutions. A pilot study on peer-to-peer digital education

From June 2023 to May 2025
The scope of this Research Stream is to create a digital literacy protocol targeted specifically to older people, providing them with the digital skills needed to age healthy and actively, in a changing social context. Specifically, we aim to pilot (by designing, implementing, and evaluating) a peer-to-peer digital literacy course, whereby older educators teach less digitally savvy older people how to use smartphone daily utility apps, such as e-Gov, homebanking etc. We shall adopt a gendered approach and a co-creation attitude in all stages of the course realisation e. g., when selecting the peer educators, recruiting the course participants, and creating the course materials. The intervention will be conducted in close collaboration with associations engaged in the field of active ageing and gender issues, e.g., AUSER, Casa delle Donne, ABCD, the Digital Wellbeing Research Center, etc. If successful, it could be implemented on a larger scale, providing a major contribution to enhance older people’s social (and digital) inclusion
